Shared Lives carer, finalist in Lincolnshire Care Awards

PSS Shared Lives carer, Georgina Kennedy, is shortlisted as a finalist in the 2024/25 Lincolnshire Care Awards!

Georgina has been nominated for the Community Care award and it’s no surprise to us why she’s in the limelight.

Life before Shared Lives

Before Jordan moved in with Georgina and Andrew he was struggling with alcohol dependency, a gambling addiction, and poor mental health. Georgina and Andrew welcomed Jordan in an emergency and didn’t plan to be long-term carers – but they couldn’t imagine Jordan leaving after getting to know him.

Georgina left her job as a social worker after 23 years to support Jordan full-time.

How did things get better for Jordan?

With Georgina’s social work experience and Andrew’s background as a manager of a residential home, they quickly figured out which community services could help Jordan find the independence he was looking for. Their impact has been life changing:
  • Jordan is back in touch with family and joined two day services for learning disabilities.
  • When his mum became terminally ill, they supported him through it, helping him get advice from McMillan.
  • When Jordan’s skills grew, they helped him transition to somewhere where his hobbies and abilities are supported.
Georgina and Andrew also encouraged Jordan to join two sports teams that include both disabled and non-disabled people, and he’s now part of an indoor bowls team and a pool team. His confidence is sky high. He’s gone from feeling anxious and angry to being happy and full of smiles. Jordan has stopped drinking and can now even go to the pub without the urge to drink. He’s also working with a gambling addiction team.

The awards only allow single nominations so Georgina is the sole nominee, but Andrew has been just as much a part of supporting Jordan. The pair won the PSS Shared Lives Carer award for Transformational Care in 2024.

Jordan said: ‘I can’t say enough about what they mean to me. They never gave up on me.’

Georgina said: ‘The things that this young man has achieved is truly amazing, we’ve had our ups and downs, but we are so proud of him, he is very much part of the family and continues to be so.’

The awards ceremony will take place at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Lincoln on 27th March.
