Colwyn Bay carer takes home gold award at Wales Care Awards 2024

On Friday 18th October, PSS Shared Lives carer, Karen Jackson, took home the Gold award for community care in this year’s Wales Care Awards, organised by Care Forum Wales.

Lots of our Shared Lives carers say the best part of their role is seeing the difference they make every day in the lives of the people they support. But we reckon winning a national award for it comes pretty close too!

Grandmother-of-two Karen Jackson, 61, has been a Shared Lives carer for 17 years but her career in care spans even longer. Nine years ago, she opened her heart and home in Colwyn Bay to a man with complex mental health needs. Since then, she’s been by his side, helping him transform his life – from building his confidence and self-esteem to supporting his social skills, all in a safe, loving home where he truly feels protected and nurtured.
Karen sits in her garden on a sunny day - she smiles warmly at the camera and her hands are placed politely on her lap as she sits down among the trees. She's wearing a navy top and she's a blong, white woman in her 50s.

But Karen didn’t stop there. A year ago, she welcomed a second person into her home, and now, with Karen’s support, that person has grown in their independence and self-care, they’ve got a thriving social life and live life to the fullest.

We’re chuffed to bits that Karen took home gold at the Wales Care Awards in the Community Care category!

Karen said: ‘It was a great honour and privilege to receive the Gold Award for care. It was a fantastic experience to be in the company of so many dedicated people.’
